Oh Baby!  Coding and Documentation Reminders for Newborn Facility Coding - In this session we will review the ICD-10-CM/PCS coding and documentation nuances for newborn facility coding.  We will specifically analyze coding audit error trends we identified in reviewing newborn encounters.   We will highlight the ICD-10-CM/PCS guidelines for newborn, perinatal, and congenital conditions as well as examine key AHA Coding Clinic surrounding newborn encounters.  Also, during the session we will review documentation improvement opportunities for newborn encounters.  We will also present case studies for newborn encounters and talk through the correct code assignment and documentation issues relevant to the encounter.

Leigh Poland, RHIA, CCS, CDIP, CIC has had the opportunity to present at the AHIMA National Convention, ACDIS Convention, and AAPC Convention on multiple occasions. She has been a guest speaker on AHIMA webinars, written articles for the AHIMA Journal, AHIMA White Papers, For the Record, and Part B News. Leigh has traveled the US and Internationally providing coding education.   Leigh is responsible for managing the continuous coding education and certification preparatory programs for 3000+ coders.   She is a key advisor to our AGS Health International Coding Training Academy.  She is the coding SME AGS and offers mentoring and guidance to our internal auditing team.  She was the Corporate HIM Supervisor for a major healthcare provider and had the opportunity to work closely with HIM directors, supervisors, and coders across the United States. She managed the following in her role as corporate supervisor:   coding education, auditing support, interim coding management, and  HIM system implementation.  She also served as the RAC Coordinator at the corporate level during this time.  Leigh has also worked as coder, coding supervisor, and director of HIM in a 250-bed acute care facility. She has experience in an acute care setting, post-acute care, behavioral health and a physician-owned ambulatory surgery center.  She has worked as a Senior Coding Consultant for large healthcare organizations throughout the state of Florida where she provided coding guidance, education, compliance audits, and advisory services.
